DON’T LET CRITICISMS CHASE PEOPLE AWAY

Dear HR , Training and Learning & Development Heads,

In my previous article, the word of ‘ARE YOU OPTIMIZING YOUR PEOPLE’ is very thoughtful statement to me too.
Before we end our week, today, I wish to share with you on Sun Tzu’ statement: Don’t Let Criticisms Chase People Away. Happy reading folks.

DON’T LET CRITICISMS CHASE PEOPLE AWAY

  •       TALKING ABOUT AND CONTROLLING CRITISMS IS PART OF EVERY MANAGER’S JOB
  •             As Sun Tzu has observed: “Treat your men kindly but keep strict control over them to ensure victory.”
  •           The only difference between a skillful manager and unskilled one is how to criticize effectively without the employee resenting his manager to the extent of losing motivation, turning into a truly bad employee, or quitting the organization altogether. This is especially critical in times of crisis when you need every employee to work well as a team and contribute towards productivity. Let us then explore some of the fundamental principles in criticizing effectively.

LEADERSHIP BY EXAMPLE
As Sun Tzu has pointed out:
“Secure the loyalty of your troops first before disciplining them or they will not be submissive.”
It is only when your subordinates hold you some respect that they are willing to take your instructions or be criticized by you. And such respect is to be earned, not demanded or expected. Which is why Sun Tzu has urged:
“The good commander seeks virtues and goes about disciplining himself according to the laws so as to effect control over his own success.”
This is the essence of effective leadership: leading by example. Perhaps you can see now why many managers have never been able to really get their people to follow rules and regulations, or to accept criticisms. These managers are usually the culprits themselves when it comes to flouting rules and regulations since they often go by the “Do as I say, not as I do” says maxim. It is only if you are willing and capable of doing something that you could tell others to do it, and should they fail, you would be in the position to tell them off.

Until our next learning, lets learn how to accept, take and teach how to handle criticism to our employees.
