Are we Competent with Competencies – by Graeme Field

Hi there,
Here is a great article written by Graeme Field concerning us being competent with competencies.  We have summarised his valuable lessons learnt and shared below. Do read on.

Why hasn’t competency modelling delivered on its promise for many organisations?
Do competencies really add value to businesess and organisations?
The below are famous competency gurus whom explains their competency  models.
1.       Richard Boyatsiz illustrated a logical model of management competence in his book called ‘The Competent Manager’.  This model provides a context for demands of management and helped managers understand the competencies required more effective.
2.       Lombardo and Eichinger showcased that most leaders identify the wrong competencies for success – they don’t know how to get at the essence of competency requriements.  Trying to cram too many competencies into just 5 – 10 statements and hoping that will do the job.  The truth is all organisations needs multiple competency models to fit their different needs.
3.       A global Conference Board study in year 2012 asked many senior executives what were the most important items on their talent agenda and the top four were: Grow Talent internally, Improve Leadership Deveopment, Provide training and development and Hire Talent.
4.       A Russell study in year 2001 showed that top level corporate executive performance can be reliably predicted by a leadershsip competency model.
5.       Pluzdrak study in year 2007 showed the effectiveness of Leadership Development programme and that positive changes on the key leadership competencies for individual leaders were positively correlated with both increase in net revenues and profitability.
So our question to you: What Competencies have you adopted?
